Emotional Stress Causing Back Pain?

 
It is not uncommon for a client to come into my office complaining of intense pain somewhere in their body and asking me…”What caused this? Or “How did this happen?”
 
Initially when this question was asked I would laugh and reply “How am I supposed to know? I don’t have a camera following you around!”
 
Now I understand that these clients are serious with their questions and they really are perplexed as to what is causing their pain.
 
This conversation happened in my clinic this morning. A client came in 5 days ago with severe pain in her lower back. It had happened once before many years ago and had now returned with no known cause. The client returned today and the pain was 90% gone after her treatment last week. She asked me, “What caused my pain?”
 
Both of us were aware that there were not any physical traumas or stress applied to the area prior to the pain. But upon more specific questioning we realized there was an exceptional amount of emotional trauma and stress experienced by the client accumulating for weeks prior to the onset of pain.
 
The client also had a previous history of a virus that attacked the right hip joint which then resulted in arthritis. Usually the hip would not have symptoms and could function within normal range.
 
The weak link in my client’s body is her right hip. When my client tried to assimilate the emotional stress she was experiencing she unknowingly stored the stress at the location of her weak link, resulting in muscles contracting and tensing to protect the area. This caused the client to experience sciatic pain down the right leg and a tight band of pain around the lower back.
 
Unfortunately, on a subconscious level, the client was using a faulty stress management system. Her mind could not deal with the emotional burdens and stored them physically. Consequently the pain she experienced perpetuated the cycle as her stress increased with the increase of pain.
 
My client came in with a physical complaint that was dealt with in a physical manner, but for complete healing to occur my client needs to reduce the emotional stress in her life and find stress relief before it accumulates in the body.
 
Now that the issues have been acknowledged they can also be cleared both physically and emotionally. The client expressed at the end of her session today that she felt “lighter” and more “relaxed.” We discussed how she could reduce her stress and be more aware of how her body reacts to her emotional health.
